November 15

Last night's meeting was more subdued and intimate than last month's. There were only 5 of us in attendance, but as Renee pointed out, there was more wine for those of us who did show up!

We tried two wines from a California vineyard: Topel Winery. First up was the Syrah Cuvee Donnis, named for Donnis Topel, one of the proprietors. The syrah was a deep, dark, inky color. Wonderful aromas of spice and berries filled the nose. Jammy fruits of plums and dark berries presented themselves after the wine was opened for a bit. There were also subtle hints of leather. The finish was lengthy and urged another sip or two...or several ;-)

Next up was the Cabernet Sauvignon Hidden Vineyard. It was a deep, dark purple color. The nose was fruit-driven with hints of tobacco and cassis. The palate was as fruity as the nose, with a medium to full body and ripe tannins. Delicious! There was not a clear favorite of the two, they were both equally well-liked.

Next month we'll be trying a Bordeaux-style blend from Napa and a real Bordeaux. Same grapes, totally different wines? We'll see. Until next month, ladies...
